A young child who was born HIV, the precursor virus to AIDS, has recently been found to show no signs of the virus. This child was treated with antiretroviral drugs in the first few days of it's life, as is common procedure with most infants born with HIV. This child presented different results.
In my opinion, this is a very inspiring finding. HIV and AIDS bring about as much fear as diagnoses of cancer. It is very inspiring to learn that HIV can possibly be cured in the near future. Yes, this may just be a fluke, but it brings confidence to many people around the world.
1. Science is based on evidence
2. Role of credibility
3. Role of chance

This article is very interesting as it tells of a breakthrough in the curing of HIV that could lead to helping more than 3 million children in the world who are infected by HIV.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/04/health/for-first-time-baby-cured-of-hiv-doctors-say.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0), even though this could potentially lead to the curing of HIV, scientists say that these findings in the baby would most likely not be relevant to adults.
This is a very cool story how this kid was cured from HIV symptoms from drug therapy. This could lead to a better world were there are less people affected with HIV in the near future.
ReplyDeleteThis article,(http://news.msn.com/science-technology/mississippi-baby-born-with-hiv-cured?ocid=ansnews11), explains how there needs to be more testing in order to see if this result can happen agian. In the article, it said that researhers believe that the infant was cured by early treamtment, not allowing hard-to-treat cells to form to eachother. If this works on other children, I belive that this could be the best medical advancment of our time.

I wonder if his treatment included anything with 25HC. In my last blog I did an article about a newly discovered protein, CH25H, that converts cholesterol into 25HC. 25HC can penetrate a cell's wall and keep a virus from getting in. It would be interesting if CH25 was included in his treatment.
