Influenza Study: Meet Virus' New Enemy

This article was about the flu and how scientists have made breakthroughs in curing many future victims. They have developed a vaccine that is different than the typical Tamiflu vaccine given to patients. The reason it is different is because the old drugs focus on interrupting the ability to help influenza detach from an infected cell's surface by digesting sialic acid, a sugar on the surface of the cell. The flu virus uses the same sugar to stick to the cell while invading it. Once it is attached, the flu can invade the cell and replicate. This new drug stops the enzyme from dissolving the acid, which prevents the virus from spreading.

  1. From what I know, every year the flu vaccine is different, and there is not a 100% chance that the vaccine will work. The virus that the vaccine protects against may not be the one that is circling around that year, so the virus will not be affected. Maybe this new vaccine is different in that it doesn't need to be such an exact match? I don't know, but I found this website interesting:
