Middle-Schoolers Discover Novel Chemical Bond

Some students in Dedham Maine were given the opportunity to participate in an outreach science program at Vanderbilt University. The students, with the supervision of their teacher, were able to expand a discovery. The discovery was of a novel chemical bond found in animal tissues. Their research found that this bond was also present in another lineage of multicellular organisms. It demonstrates its evolutionary importance. This bond can also be describes as an "essential innovation for the genesis of animal tissues. their novel discovery will be included in a published scientific article.Because of their discovery, the students now will be at the Experimental Biology conference to talk about their experiences.

Themes of Nature:
  • This science is role of motivation and curiosity because the students volunteered to participate in the organization
  • This science is collaborative because the students collaborated with teachers as well as scientists at Vanderbilt University.
