In Europe there are up to 2 million babies born with MeHg exposures above the safe limit of 0.58µg/g and 200,000 above the WHO recommended maximum of 2.5µg/g. Some mercury (MeHg) occurs naturally in the wild: volcano eruptions and forest fires. Most is generated by burning fossil fuels. Marine animals concentrate mercury which exposes humans to it if they eat it. Mercury affects brain development, resulting in a lower IQ. Once MeHg is formed it cycles through the environment for thousands of years. This article shows that science is collaborative since Elsie M. Sunderland and Noelle E. Selin worked with Prof Philippe Grandjean.
