HERB the robot

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University are working with a robot they call "HERB" to create a form of artificial intelligence. HERB has a color image and depth sensor as well as two mechanical arms. The current goal of the project is object recognition and manipulation. HERB uses the information from its sensors to guess what objects are of use to its task (learning how to identify and manipulate objects). Currently HERB's definition of an object is something that can be picked up. This is not true artificial intelligence but rather a program that collects data about its environment and explores.

2. role of curiosity - HERB explores!

  1. I think maybe scientists should not try to make artificial intelligence... haven't any of them seen Terminator, or any movie about robots in the future? They realize that humans are the problem and kill us all. I would prefer if that didn't happen, and I'm fine with having to do chores myself. It seems like a good deal to get life and chores instead of death by robot.

  2. Very interesting article, many scientists are now making so many advances in technology its hard to grasp. This similar article i read talk about they reproduced the sense of touch through a fake hand!
    amazing!
